P2 - Explain different uses of animation

Advertising – Animation is used in advertising because people just think of a advert of real life events that can just happen to anyone, but using animation can show things that real life advertise cannot do. For example the Toy Story sky advert they use animation in this advert to create a bit of humour because of the little green aliens. They start this advert by all of the characters on the internet at the same time and this animation in the advert gives an indication to people how slow the internet can be when everyone is on it at the same time. The animation used in this advert appeals to all ages especially families. This is because most families may have watched Toy Story, the advert would appeal to the children because of the film and they might enjoy it and it would appeal to the parents because of the internet service provider (ISP) they would like to be with.

Creative arts – Animation in creative arts is used to create a wider sense of imagination from the artists perspective. Artists like to do this because they create new ideas and art work. A good example who uses animation as a creative medium is Warner Brothers and their TV show Looney Tunes. Warner Brothers created this in the early 1940’s till the late 1950’s. Looney Tunes were originally drew on storyboards in the late 1930’s.

Entertainment – A good example of a film that uses animation is the polar express. This is because the animation used in films like this is to create the effect of real life human movement. this has help the developers of this film because they have made three films it has made it a lot easier and a lot faster to make the films. Animation is used all throughout the film such as the human movements such as the walking of the characters, their mouths moving whilst talking. Animation is used to make the characters look realistic and not controlled by pieces of string. This film is a good example of how animation can be used because in the film tom hanks is the train conductor and the animation techniques can make him look a lot like the real Tom Hanks.

Education – The use of animation in education enables people to understand things better for example watching educational videos online. This helps school children with their understanding on what they are learning about. Also animation can be used in a variety of different ways to help. Animation can also be used to get a certain point across for example PowerPoint, animation is used in PowerPoint to not only make it look better and more professional, the animation within PowerPoint can also get a point across.

Simulation – Animation in simulation can be used in different ways (work and training) purposes. A good example of simulation is the formula 1 simulators the teams have at their different bases all over the country. This is a good example because the new drivers for the teams can use this to get a feel for what I feels like driving the car and also get a feel for how life will be when they are actually out there racing. They use this so when the young driver or experienced driver gets in the simulator and the settings and the technology are all controlled so as the drivers are using the simulator there driving gets tracked on loads of different computer so when they are done they can look how well or badly they’ve done to see if they need to make any improvements to the car or their driving.

Animation U31 P1
Animation is a series of pictures/ images that are combined together to create a short film or to present a certain topic. Animation is created using either adobe flash or blender, using a series of different images and key frames to create a short film with a load of effects. Animation puts the pictures together to produce an illusion of a nonstop motion.
Two Traditional (non-computer animation)
A traditional non computer animation is a flip book, this is where the creator will draw a image on a page in the book and then flip to the next page and draw the same image but in a different position giving the illusion that the image is moving by flipping the page in the book. One company who used flip books to create is Disney. This is because they will create the flipbook with all the different images on it to test their animation before it is published.
Another traditional non computer animation is clay animation, this is where clay models are created and a photo is taken of the animation. Once one picture has been taken of the clay animation, the creator will slightly move the models into a different position to give the effect that the clay is moving. One good example of clay animation is the way Wallace and gromit was filmed. Aardman Animations created the series of short films by using clay animation, it was said that the making of these films took 3 years to make.
Computer Animation Techniques
Key Frames
A key frame is where you can set different things in place in your animation for example, if you want to insert a bit of text or an image you will select where you want the key frame to start , then click where you would like the key frame to end. To create a short film using key frames, there needs to be a series of different key fames with different thing happening in each one. The position of the object is important because this shows the viewing point of the set animation, text or drawing. Also between the key frames you can different effects to create the illusion that the image or text is moving in a specific way, e.g. text tween, this can be used to create the effect of the text more into the position of the screen you have set it to be in.
Morphing
Animation morphing is the animation technique used to create an image and turn it into another one in the same. This technique is mostly used on transforming images of people into a different image, this technique is very clever because when watching this animation technique back its almost if the first image melts and slowly transforms into a new one, for example if someone typed “hi” and selected the morphing animation technique this would enable the user to transform the word hi into a different word with a different style.
Masking

Animation masking has the ability to create the illusion that the image behind the mask is moving. For example if you used the masking tool on top of a a piece of text it would give the illusion that the text is moving when really it isn’t, it’s just the masking tool moving across the text. This technique is also a good technique to use, this is because when the mask is in use the highlighted area looks as if it’s underneath a microscope.

Another traditional non computer animation is a kinetoscope this enables one individual user to watch a film through a small peep hole. This type of non computer animation works by a series of images moving over a light to give the illusion that the images are moving. This was used by Thomas A. Edison, this type of animation was a follow up to his phonograph which worked in a similar way.
